You should first learn to sustain your balance on the ice that is very much crucial. Start your skating lessons after relaxation and technique that help grow on each other.
Trusting the ice is important. Though it may sound silly, this will help yourself in being comfortable on the ice. You should try walking first as it may give you ankle support and aid you to balance the friction of the ice. You may also use the wall as support if essential. Other than holding wall, holding your arms out at just below shoulder level will help you in achieving great balance on the ice.
Leaning on your weak foot is the first step of learning and then proceed by pushing in a diagonal direction outwards with your strong foot in such a way that you are scooping snow behind and to the right that will help in propelling forward. Now, get the right foot back in next to the left and do again.
Keeping this up and beginning to make longer strokes can help you in gliding. You can acquire more power and efficiency in skating faster if you provide an extra flick of the toe/ankle of each stroke at the end.
Bending your knees, now move your body slowly with the strokes. You can stop by placing one skate behind you with the toe opposing away from you and tenderly dragging it behind until you stop. On doing this, you will put your balance on one foot only.
Thus, practicing skating on one foot is the perfect technique. Now you can start skating backwards, turn around moving your feet in half circles. When on a rink, try creating a half-moon shape pushing backwards with your right foot, while placing your feet equal to each other on the line. Then try creating one with your left until you starts gliding backwards.
