How To Prepare Powdered Formula
Things you need:
Can of powdered baby formula with scoop.
Can opener and supplies to boil water, if necessary.
Baby bottle, cap and nipple.
Sink or other water source.
Steps:
#1 Pan of hot water or hot water tap, if heating the bottle is necessary.
#2 Clean your hands before preparing baby formula.
#3 Carefully read the directions on the can.
#4 Before preparing, let the cold water at the sink run for 30 seconds to one minute. This lessons the risk for lead or other contaminants in the water.
#5 If you have been instructed to boil water before preparing formula, boil water for 5 minutes. You should not boil the water more than once, as this can alter the concentration of minerals in the water.
#6 Fill the baby bottle with cold water. If you are using boiled water, let it cool before pouring it into the baby bottle.
#7 Carefully measure the water prior to adding any formula powder. Do not add formula powder first, as the powder in the bottom of the bottle will skew the quantity of the water.
#8 Add the correct measurement of powdered formula to the bottle of water.
#9 Put the lid on the baby bottle and shake it gently until the powder formula clumps are mixed well into the water.
#10 It is not necessary to warm the bottle of formula. If your baby prefers warm formula, heat the bottle by placing it in a pan of hot water for a few minutes, or hold the bottle under the hot water tap for some minutes.
#11 Shake the bottle after heating it, then turn the bottle upside down and let one or two drops fall out on your forearm.
#12 Now you are ready to feed your baby.
#13 Throw away leftover formula when you are done feeding your baby. It's not secure to re-use leftover formula, although it is refrigerated and reheated.
