How To Build a Treehouse

Building a tree house is an idyllic project that lets your imagination roam. Following is step-by-step information on how to build a free standing tree house.

Framing wood, bolts, plywood and metal corner brackets are the required materials; and saw, hammer, measuring tape and ladder are the necessary tools.

First decide whether the tree house would be used as a childrens play area or an adults retreat area. Then choose a suitable tree that would be able to hold up the load of a heavy wooden structure. Most appropriate trees would be hemlock, oak, beech, maple and fir.

Choose and plan a design for the tree house, once you have everything cleared. Arrange all the materials required. Having all the materials at hand not only helps maintain the work flow but also prevents the hassle of going back and forth to the shop to buy additional supplies.

To support the tree house up, first build the required platform and supports. Using bolts, mount the beams onto the tree. Place the bolts no less than 12 inches distant. Build the platform near the trunk of the tree. To lock it in place, utilize diagonal bracing, such as stainless steel or galvanized fasteners. Ensure that it is centrally balanced around the tree to support uneven loads and prevent from swaying.

Make the floor using exterior plywood sheets or frame tongue-and-groove floorboards. Make sure that the floor can support enough weight and there are no visible gaps between boards.

Build the tree houses walls and framework using techniques that are used for a ground-based house. To furnish you ready access to power tools, prefabricate many parts of the frame and walls as much as possible on the ground.

In several ways, access to the tree house can be provided. A simple rope ladder is sufficient. Alternatively, steps with hand rails are much suitable for higher tree houses. Build the steps and hand rails as you would build it in a ground-based house. According to your preference, add accessories to the house. Consider adding a coat of paint, indoor/outdoor carpeting and lighting fixtures.

By following these steps, you can make a fun and satisfying project that will provide your kids and friends hours of enjoyment.
