How To Use Crutches

Crutches can be used easily while following some useful instructions, little coordination and then practice. You can obtain suitable instructions from your physical therapist or doctor. Here are some of the important points for you to follow.

1. The first step is to fit your crutches so that you can use them conveniently and safely. Confirm whether the crutches fit properly. Remember to lean your shoulders slightly forward and bent your wrists and elbows.

2. Checking the padding for any wear or tear is essential.

3. Start by walking by slowly placing both crutches to your front. Change your weight and your healthy leg forward.

4. Remember to take rest as required since the crutches can annoy your armpits.

6. Avoid leaning on your crutches, but try sitting down or leaning against a wall.

7. Rather than using stairs, make use of the elevators and ramps when accessible.

8. When going to a new building or area, you should find out if handicapped access is available. Avoid climbing long staircases, or staircases that has no railings.

9. In case of climbing stairs, remember to move slowly rather than hurrying up as if can cause further injury.

10. You need to be careful while opening a door. Watch out for your feet while opening and remember to support yourself on one crutch and then open the door with the other hand.
