How To Treat Flu

The flu can make you feel really miserable and make it difficult to perform basic daily tasks. In extreme cases, or in high risk groups, it can even be fatal.

There are several ways to minimize the risk of contracting the flu, but once you have it, it's time for harm reduction. While there is no cure for the flu, there are some treatments that can help quicken the pace of recovery and minimize the discomfort you will feel.

The most important thing to do to help your body fight the flu is to drink plenty of fluids. Water, orange juice and sports drinks with electrolytes will help you replenish lost fluids and provide vitamins.

The next important thing to do is sleep. Don't try to be a hero and go to work. If you are sick with the flu, it is actually in your employers' best interest for you to stay at home so as not to spread the virus to your coworkers, and to ensure the fastest recovery. If you need to go grocery shopping, or other supplies, try ordering them online if possible. Basically, you want to rest and get the sleep your body needs to recover. If you have the chills, then it's best to stay under a warm blanket as much as possible.

Unless you have a severe fever (in which case you should call a doctor) don't use a fever suppressant, since a mild fever actually helps your body fight the flu. If you're a healthy adult, then cough expectorants and decongestants are safe at least in moderation. If a young child, elderly adult, or someone with serious health issues has the flu, then they should talk to their doctor about the best course of action.

The most important things are to drink plenty of fluids and get lots of bed rest. Just take it easy and try to avoid anything stressful!
