How To Treat Back Pain
The first step if you have severe back pain, is to determine what exactly is causing it. Usually an x-ray or a CT scan can determine if there is some serious problem such as a herniated disk, scoliosis or other issues. Getting this information is important to figure out how to go about treating the problem.
For short term pain relief, you can take pain killers. However, these can be addictive, so it's best try other methods first. There are two positions you can put your body in for back pain relief. First, you can lie on your back on the floor with a pillow under your head and a pillow under your knees, with your arms at your side. The other position is the same, except your legs are propped up on the seat of chair, on top of a pillow. Do this as much as possible when your back is sore. It may take a couple of days or more of doing this regularly to get pain relief.
Other temporary relief methods include heating pads, ice packs and massages. These can be good for muscle spasms that cause back pain.
Some people also find that spending time on an inversion table (a device that lets you hang upside down) is helpful. However, this method does not work for everyone.
A lot of people turn to chiropractors when their back gets sore. This field is not recognized by the medical profession, but many people swear by them. However, some people claim that their back pain only got worse after seeing a chiropractor. And many people who use a chiropractor end up using them regularly, so they probably can't cure your back pain. A lot of the success of the treatment may depend on the skill level of the practitioner.
There are lifestyle changes you can make to reduce back pain. First, avoid putting to much strain on your back. Second, exercise in order to lose weight and also to build up muscles such abs which help to support the back. There are also numerous stretches you can do that can help with back pain over time. Other important lifestyle changes include maintaining a proper posture.
Slouching while standing, or leaning in while reading a computer screen is a habit that most of us have without even realizing it, and it may be largely responsible for the back pain epidemic we see today. Practicing good posture is very important for reducing back pain. You can also use orthopedic back rests and special orthopedic mattresses. You should make sure your mattress is in good condition, because if it is too old it may no longer provide proper support for your back.
In extreme cases, surgery may be used as a last resort. This is sometimes used to treat a herniated disk, or a fractured spine.
Whatever you do, you should see a doctor first and describe your back pain. Don't try any exercises or medications before consulting your doctor.
