How To Stop Hiccups
When you are disrupted by hiccups, try holding your breath for 30 seconds and then slowly release it. You can also try swallowing something bitter like you can suck on a lemon or swallow a teaspoon of vinegar. You can disrupt the rhythm of your hiccups by another effective method known as the gag method that involves putting your finger down your throat not too far so that you may throw up.
Drinking water is another effective method. Drinking a large glass of water steadily with regular, evenly speeded swallows help in interrupting the rhythm of hiccups. This will also help in washing down that may be irritating your throat and nerve down there. Drink water that is free of ice and bubbles.
Drinking upside down that is by bending at the waist over a sink and drinking from the side of the glass farthest away from your body is also found to help in stopping hiccups. Swallowing a Tablespoon of Peanut Butter is also highly effective in ceasing hiccups. However, this is based on the theme that the unusual sensory experienced as a result of the swallowing of peanut butter disrupts the nerve impulses that start the hiccups.
Diverting attention is also a good idea. You can do this by hanging a thread or strip of red cloth in the middle of baby's forehead, near the bridge of the nose that is commonly done to stop infant hiccups. Swallowing a Teaspoon of dry white Sugar is found very effective in stopping your hiccups. Little different from the theory of swallowing peanut butter is, here the sensory impulse developed by swallowing the sugar makes your diaphragm contract and stops hiccups.
When you are under hiccup attack, try pulling on your tongue, while opening your mouth wide and give it a gentle yank while grasping and holding your tongue for several seconds. If your hiccups are such that it irritates you frequent and are exceptionally long, you may need a check up because it may be due to some obstruction in your esophagus. Your doctor will give you some barium liquid to drink or demand an x-rays or prescribe medication if essential.
