How To Get Abs
Getting abs is something a lot of people want to do, because it can make them a lot more attractive. Getting the "six pack" muscled ab look is not easy, but most people can do it if they are serious about it and willing to put in some hard work. It basically involves two things: building up the abdominal muscles and losing excess belly fat if there is any, so that the muscles are visible.
First I'll cover how to build the abdominal muscles. Before doing any of these exercises, talk to your doctor to make sure it's safe for you. Crunches are highly effective for building ab muscles. This video demonstrates how to do a crunch.
Another important exercise to get toned abs is sit ups. The following video shows you how to do sit ups.
Leg lifts can also help you get toned abs. This video shows how to do proper leg lifts.
You should also do Jackknife sit ups. For a jackknife, you lie flat on the floor. Put your hands on the ground to your sides. You can lift them once you get used to this exercise. Lift your knees and your torso at the same time so that your face and knees meet at an imaginary line that extends from your pelvis to the sky. Your nose should be able to touch your knees at the top. Your legs will automatically fold. Lie back down and repeat. Add a weight between your feet once you're getting stronger.
V-Ups are another great abdominal exercise. This video shows you how to do V-Ups.
Also perform static holds. For a static hold, you need to have your body flat on the ground in push up position, but with your elbows on the floor. Try to stay in this position for as long as you can, but aim for close to a minute at first. Once you build up your abs, you should be able to do 20 of these.
You should also strengthen your oblique muscles after you've been doing ab exercises for a while. Here is a video that demonstrates how to exercise your obliques.
The best exercise for your abs is the bicycle maneuver. For this, you lie on the floor with your lower back firmly on the ground. Put your hands behind your ears and bend your knees. Now pedal with your legs like a bicycle, and touch your right elbow to your left knee and vice versa. Make sure your breathing is relaxed.
Using all of these exercises gives you a lot of variety in your quest to tone your abs. But you won't even notice your rock hard ab muscles if they are hidden behind a layer of abdominal fat. There are several ways to lose fat.
First you should lift weights. Having more muscle mass means you burn more calories even when your body is at rest. Don't worry about your muscles getting too big unless you are lifting very large weights a lot.
You should eat a small meal approximately every 3 hours. That will keep your metabolism steady so you can burn calories. All of your meals should also include some lean protein.
You should eat smaller dinners. Make sure you have healthy snacks during the day so you aren't ravenous at dinner time. Drink a large glass of water before dinner.
Also make sure you get enough fiber in your diet. For fiber, you should eat whole grains, fruits, veggies and nuts. Fiber supplements are another option.
Avoid skipping breakfast. Eating breakfast is very important for getting rid of fat and breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. You can often get your fiber in a cereal or breakfast snack bar.
Make sure you drink plenty of water. Many experts recommend 8 glasses a day. If you find water boring, you can get a lot of your fluid needs from unsweetened tea. If it's green tea, you get the added benefit of a faster metabolism, helping you burn more calories.
Avoid white, starchy foods such as potatoes, white rice, refined sugar and white flour. These foods are readily converted into fat once they're in your body.
If you do the abdominal exercises regularly and follow these tips for losing fat, you'll be on your way to having incredible looking abs. Just don't get discouraged when you don't see results right away. This will take some time for the full effects. Typically, close to a year, so hang in there!
