How to Cook A New York Steak

New York Strips are one of the most popular steaks in America due to their full flavor, marbeling and tenderness. This steak is best when grilled, but is also great pan-fried. This article will cover both methods.

If youre grilling you need to follow these steps:

  • Make sure your steak is room temperature
  • Trim fat thats greater than half an inch, and cut through fat strip every 1.5 inches
  • Lightly brush the steak with olive oil, add some cracked pepper if you like
  • Preheat the grill as hot as it will get
  • Oil the grate (can be done with trimmed fat)
  • Put the steak on the grill for one minute, then flip for another minute
  • Now flip it again and rotate 45 degrees for half the remaining cooking time
  • Flip again for remaining cooking time and you should have diamond pattern grill marks
  • Use index finger or blunt end of grilling fork to check for desired tenderness and remove when done
  • Let the steak rest for 5 minutes, trim remaining fat and serve

For an average sized New York Strip steak, youre looking at about 18 minutes total grill time if you want it medium.

If you cant grill for whatever reason, you can still get a great steak by pan frying, just follow these directions (for a well done steak):

  • Rinse steak with cold water
  • Pat dry
  • Puncture steak with table fork all over on both sides
  • Sprinkle salt and pepper on one side rub it in, well on both sides using finger or back of spoon
  • Pour cooking oil into a pan preheat pan to medium heat
  • Put steak in pan and place a lid over the pan
  • Leave it for one minute and then remove from heat
  • When sizzling stops open lid, flip the steak put on lid and return to heat for about 1 to 2 minutes
  • Remove from heat and when sizzling stops, remove lid and flip steak again put lid back on and return to heat
  • Let cook for 5 minutes, remove from heat and wait for sizzling to stop
  • Check for tenderness using your finger or blunt end of a fork
  • If its done, its time to eat, if not throw it back in the pan for a while
