How To Save Money
The first thing you need to figure out is approximately when you will need the money and how much you think you'll need. Because of inflation, this can be hard to determine, but do your best to come up with a ballpark figure.
If you find that you haven't been able to save any money, then it may have something to do with your spending habits. If you only spend money on the bare necessities and you still can't save any money, it means that if you want to save money, you either need to move in order to lower your cost of living, or get a higher paying job.
What's worse is if you find yourself running a deficit. This can only be sustained for so long and if you finance it with credit card debt, you will pay through the nose with sky high interest rates.
The first thing to do if you want to get your spending under control is to carry a notepad, (or smartphone) and every time you spend money, make a note of it. If you do this for a few months, you'll realize just how much the little things add up. If you're a smoker, you may be able to save thousands of dollars a year by quitting. If you buy a lot of coffee from coffee shops, you can also get big savings by cutting back on that.
Are you a shopaholic? Is it impossible for you to walk past a clothing store without stepping in and making an impulse purchase? Do you buy things that are in fashion for a few months and then stop wearing them? Overspending on clothing can be a real problem, especially for women.
Men tend to spend more on electronics and gadgets. Do you really need to upgrade to the latest cell phone every year? Can you enjoy life without rushing out and buying the latest and greatest toys and gadgets? If you want to save money, you have to learn to at least wait for a while for technology to mature before buying. With technology, things that are brand new are always a lot more expensive. After time, prices tend to come down a lot.
Also ask yourself if the features of new technology are really worth paying extra for. For example, TVs with a 1080p resolution are touted as being better than 780p, but both are high definition and in tests, most people couldn't tell the difference. Yet 1080p TVs sell for a lot more than 780p.
Another great way to save money is by preparing more of your own food. You can make your own lunch to bring to work and save a bundle that way. You should be able to eat a healthy breakfast before leaving for work every morning. And dinners in restaurants can be very expensive, so it's best to eat at home as much as possible if you want to save. If you can't finish your meal, save it for leftovers instead of throwing it out.
Do you play the lottery? Some people spend thousands of dollars on the lottery every year, yet you usually have greater odds of getting struck by lightning than winning. If you can resist the temptation to play the lottery or to gamble (unless you are really good at poker or blackjack), then you can save yourself a lot of money.
Drinking too much alcohol can really add up too. Wine and spirits are the most expensive, but even a heavy beer drinker may spend thousands every year on the habit. If you can live without alcohol, or drink very moderately, you may be able to save a lot. The same can be said if you have any kind of drug habit.
Coupons are great for saving money. You can find them in newspapers, magazines and online. You should also do a lot of comparison shopping online, or phone stores to check prices before you make a purchase.
Another way to save money is to cut back on monthly bills. If you can reduce the use of your cell phone, then you may achieve big monthly savings. Many people also find that they can live without cable TV, especially since the internet provides so much video and entertainment now. Reducing energy use by installing insulation, installing a solar water heater or other means can also save you a lot of money over time. Also, be sure to turn lights off when nobody is using a room and use energy efficient appliances when you can.
When doing your taxes, make sure you have reduced your bill as much as possible. Investing in good tax software can actually save you a lot of money.
And finally, look at how much you pay for transportation. Could you save money by using public transit or biking instead of driving? Or could you carpool with someone? Nowadays people who live in major urban centers can use a car share program if they just need a car for occasional use.
If you look at how you spend your money and are willing to make some sacrifices, chances are you should be able to save a lot of money. For a while, Americans forgot how to save. Now we are all realizing just how important saving is for the future, so get started today!
