How To Use a Compass

A compass is a critical and simple tool that helps you to find direction in the middle of a sea, forest, or in a city.

Based on the earth's magnetic field, this simple tool that was in use for centuries, if used properly, will efficiently help to find the correct direction.

A magnetic compass is easy to be used. In this article, we will provide you with important tips on how to use a compass to find the direction without the use of a map.

Steps:

1. Start by holding the base plate compass flat facing your chest in such a way that the compass needle floats without stinting pointing to magnetic north.

2. Now turn around the entire compass housing such that needle settles within the orienting arrow outlined onto the base of the compass housing. (The arrow in red is the orienting arrow.) You will find that the zero degree mark on the compass housing and the north end of the needle are both aligned, pointing to the magnetic north.

3. While retaining the orienting arrow and the compass needle in such a way that it point to the north, slowly twirl the base plate so that the direction-of-travel line points exactly at the remote pointer where you wish to move. Double-checking can confirm whether everything is aligned properly.

4. Remember to make a note of the exact number of degrees that is marked on the compass dial so that the direction-of-travel line meets the compass dial. With that degree, you can find the direction to the distant landmark.

Make sure that your measurement is accurate. It should be exactly within 1 degree. By measuring the exact direction to a distant landmark, you will get the specific direction that helps you in traveling toward the landmark even without seeing it. Make sure not to confuse the north end of the compass needle with the south end.

Always hold the compass in such as way that it is up to your eye and you can look down the direction of travel arrow to make sure that it points accurately in the direction you wish to go.
