How To Read Bass Tabs

The technique of writing down music played on bass or guitar is known as TAB or tablature. Bass guitar tabs designed with the aim of helping the guitarist to play the instrument with a bass quickly without formal instructions. There are so many symbols and methods involved in reading bass tabs that has to be fully understood before learning how to play guitar tablature. Depending upon the creator, the symbols of bass varies.

First you would require learning some basics regarding the strings of the bass. Even though some models of bass tablatures have five or six strings, the average bass contains four strings only. Regardless of the number of strings, you can use the four string bass as an example. The basic string tabs are tuned G, D, A, and E, where the lowest and the fattest string is E string. The alternate tunings of the string produce different sound ranges, while tuning in CGDA pattern offers an extended upper and lower tuning range.

Frets are another design consideration of the bass tablature that are raised on the fretboard. You can create notes on the frets by pressing a string between two fret and using a string. There are several numbers in the frets that designate the fret that is to be played in the bass tabs. 0 in the string shows open note to be played without fretting. Another notable term used in bass tab is time signatures. Most tabs do not give any timing indication unlike standard musical notation, other than playing notes in a particular order. Some tabs provides a basic rhythm below the tab, therefore you can get a small musical background while playing songs.

There are so many technique abbreviations regarding stings and fret notation to bass on the bass tab. Before playing on the tabs, you need to be familiar with some of the playing techniques so that you can create unique sounds on your bass with your favorite pros play. You need to know of many abbreviations when reading bass tabs from various musicians who created them. They include as follows: | denotes the Bar lines that indicates you to lay your finger across all strings indicated, H means to indicate hammer-on, P denotes a pull-off, / or a forward slash indicates that you require sliding your finger forward to the next note, \ or the backward slash indicates that you require sliding back to the next note indicated, B or ^ are used to indicate that you need to bend the string to alter the pitch without fretting, ~ : This denotes creating tremolo/vibrato by wiggling the string back and forth.

There are various other bass techniques that are also important to read bass tab such as T : A T that indicate the need of tapping the note. You can either taps with either hand that is indicated by an L or R next to the T. P is another note used for indicating a pop. And finally S that denotes stands for a slap.
