How To Drive a Manual Transmission Car

By mastering a few little tricks on driving a manual transmission car, you can make it a fun-filled rewarding experience. The first thing that should be kept in mind when planning to learn driving is to look out for a used car. Since new car has stickier clutches, learning to drive in them can create troubles for beginners. This article provides you with valuable information regarding driving a manual car.

Steps:

#1:

Before learning how to drive, you should have a basic understanding of the different driving part of the manual transmission car. When observed at the floorboard, you can find 3 pedals that are classified as clutch, brake, and gas starting from left to right. If you watch the simple diagram on the top of gearshift, you can easily identify the position of gears. This resembles a three-legged H in most of the newer transmission cars. The third and fifth gears are located at the tops of the legs, while second, fourth and reverse gears are positioned at the bottoms. You will also find the neutral crossbar of H.

#2:

Before moving the car, watch out if the parking brake is engaged or not. You should also make sure whether your car on a flat surface in an area with plenty of space for driving. Now slowly press down on the clutch pedal before moving the gearshift to the neutral position. Then start the car and by keeping the clutch pedal down put it into the first gear. This can be done by slowly moving the gear shift to top-left position.

#3

While applying the footbrake, gradually release the parking brake. When you are actually ready to start moving your car, release the foot brake and then release the clutch pedal slowly. You should press down on the gas pedal slowly when you start hearing the slowing down of the engine. Now watch for the car moving forward. Until the car reach 3,000 rpm accelerate it and by taking your foot off the gas, slowly press down the clutch pedal while pulling the gearshift down directly through the neutral gear to the second gear. By simultaneously pressing down on the gas pedal, gently release the clutch pedal. Each time your car reaches 3,000 rpm, keep repeating the shifting process, until you are capable of driving in the required speed.

#4:

Whenever you need to reduce the speed, downshift by releasing the gas pedal. While pressing down the clutch, move the gearshift through the neutral gear towards the lower gear next to it. Release the clutch and brake slowly, when you are in the lower gear. When you wish to stop the car, just downshift to second gar and apply brake. Just before the car stops, apply the clutch, but dont downshift into the first gear. Since the reverse gear engages quickly as compared to the first gear, drive in reverse as for starting in the first gear.
